US Shuts Downs Global UGRAD Program For Pakistani Study After 15 Years

The United States has officially discontinued the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for students from Pakistan after a duration of 15 years. This action was taken following directives from the U.S. State Department. The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), which oversaw the program within Pakistan, announced the decision and expressed profound regret. They also recognized the disappointment of students who had recently applied and were looking forward to the opportunity to study in the U.S.

The Global UGRAD program was initiated in 2010 and has assisted over 2,500 Pakistani students throughout its operation. It offered them the chance to study for one semester at U.S. universities. The program emphasized not only academic excellence but also leadership development and cultural exchange. Numerous participants have gone on to achieve significant contributions within their communities, utilizing the knowledge and experiences gained abroad to foster positive changes at home.

The termination of the program signifies the end of a significant phase in educational relations between the U.S. and Pakistan. This decision is indicative of a broader reevaluation by the United States of its visa and exchange policies. These modifications are creating a sense of uncertainty for many international students aspiring to study in the U.S., not only those from Pakistan but from various countries.

Since its establishment in 1950, USEFP has been instrumental in enhancing educational and cultural relations between Pakistan and the United States. It has assisted thousands of Pakistani students and professionals through various scholarships, exchange initiatives, and advisory services. Despite the conclusion of the Global UGRAD program, USEFP has affirmed its commitment to facilitating other avenues for Pakistanis to study in the U.S. and to continue strengthening educational links between the two nations.
