Minister Orders Acs of Top Railway Officials Turned Off Over Delay in Train AC Installations

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has instructed that all air conditioning units at the Pakistan Railways Headquarters be switched off, including in the CEO’s office. This decision is part of his protest against the delays in the installation of AC units on passenger trains. Approximately 70 air conditioners have been turned off at the headquarters, a choice that has displeased several senior railway officials. They regarded it as unjust, but Abbasi stood by his actions, stating that passengers have voiced their grievances and that the planning team has failed to perform. Out of the 100 new AC units intended for trains, only 4 have been delivered punctually.

The minister warned that if the situation does not improve, he may take similar measures at divisional headquarters as well. His goal, he mentioned, is to compel the department to take its duties more seriously. Although Rs26 billion is allocated for Pakistan Railways in the 2025 federal budget, Abbasi expressed his dissatisfaction with the current progress. He demands improved planning and more rapid implementation of projects related to passenger comfort.

Abbasi further indicated he would advocate for passengers’ rights and will personally supervise reforms within the department. He emphasized that ensuring comfort on trains should be the foremost concern and that it is unacceptable for officials in air-conditioned offices to neglect passengers’ discomfort.

This extraordinary action by the minister has highlighted the problems within the railway system and has conveyed a straightforward message to the management: prioritizing passenger welfare is imperative.
