The fare for electric buses in Islamabad has been increased by CDA from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 per ride. This adjustment is effective immediately and impacts key routes such as the Orange, Blue, and Green Lines.
CDA states that the fare hike is essential to address financial challenges and ensure the smooth operation of the transport service. Even with the increased fare, CDA will still require an annual subsidy of Rs. 2.79 billion to maintain the service.
Islamabad’s fleet of electric buses consists of 160 vehicles, although only 120 are operational at the moment. The unused buses are currently sidelined due to a lack of charging stations. To address this issue, a new depot is being constructed at Zero Point to enhance charging capabilities and fleet utilization.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa emphasized that the fare increase is crucial to support modern and clean public transport while minimizing the financial burden on the government. He also mentioned that measures are being put in place to provide discounted passes for students, office workers, and senior citizens.
Furthermore, CDA is planning to implement smart cards for more convenient payment options. Passengers will also be able to access route information on Google Maps to help them better plan their journeys.
Although the fare increase might pose challenges for some individuals, CDA believes it is a necessary step to ensure the continued operation of the service and provide safe, eco-friendly travel for over 85,000 daily commuters.
